10.28.09 | Review of Shine (Cadence, October 2009) Pianist Steve Hudson proves how well he can compose in a number of jazz subgenres, like the greasy blues on 'Grover's Theme' and 'Last Call"... and brooding Ellingtonia on 'Boomba.' Hudson's work boasts strong melodies and spacious arrangements that make his revolving cast of two or three horns per track sound like a much bigger group. Among the horn players Claire Daly's swaggering baritone sax on "Grover' and 'Boomba' stands out and Hudson also takes a couple of dazzling piano solos on 'Boomba' and the lovely ballad 'Shine.'
10.28.09 | RVCC The chamber ensemble had a blast at the Welpe Theater at Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey. Thanks to the faculty, students, and fans who turned out.
08.24.09 | More News From Down Under This is one of the most impressive recordings I have heard this year. Excellent composition and fine performances from all involved. I particularly liked the dramatic composition of "Autumn Stroll" which I have already added to my playlist... In all, a five star recording from which I will add tracks to my playlists over the coming months for my national jazz program "A Jazz Hour "which is broadcast nationally across Australia weekly.

In other news, I am thrilled to collaborate with saxophonist Claire Daly on a show about the pioneer, movie star, radio operator, bar owner Mary Joyce. In December 1935 she began a 1000 miles trek by dog sled from Juneau, Alaska to Fairbanks. A woman way ahead of her time.

04.21.09 | Shine featured as one of "Hot New CD's For Summer," Jazz Improv NY - May Issue "An enjoyable synopsis of the pianist/composer's oeuvre in a compact form of seven original compositions...Hudson turns in a rollicking yet sensitive performance...a strong outing from an inventive and sympathetic musician."
04.18.09 | Merkava in May If you have never heard David Freeman's Merkava, it is a true experience.
Drawing from his musical and Jewish roots, David creates music that is spiritual and explosive, all with a deep pocket. The performance is on May 7 in New York City.
03.17.09 | News from Down Under
"Love this disc ... My favourite track is Paola closely followed by Last Call. Good to see the big brass making a comeback as well as sax and clarinet. i think the clarinet is one of the most under-rated instruments of the day. If young musicians listened more to Goodman, Herman and Eddie Daniels I am sure more would take it up. best wishes to all in the band. Will keep you up front on the airwaves on the beautiful south coast of New South Wales."

02.09.09 | WPRB Review of Shine Pianist Steve Hudson has released another terrific album. It is filled with great compositions, unique voicings and phenomenal playing. Sometimes the songs are so good, one forgets how great the playing is as well. Highlights include [Speak Out] with the impressive rhythm section work, [Shine] with the gorgeous melody, and [Grover's Theme] with the solid groove. This is great music...
